Schoen Clinic Mental Health Outpatients Facility

The Schoen Clinic Group is one of the largest owner-managed clinic groups in Germany, caring for over 101,000 patents every year. The Clinic specialise in orthopaedics and mental health care.

Murphy Philipps have worked closely with the private healthcare group to create one of their first mental health out-patients centres outside Germany. This collaborative approach included visits to the Schoen Clinics existing mental facilities and out-patient facilities located in Munich, Germany, where Murphy Philipps had the unique opportunity to observe the German patient-model of care.

Based just of the Kings Road in Chelsea, the Radnor Walk outpatient facility will provide specialist care for adult patients suffering from complex eating disorders that require assistance and support of a specialist service. The building will provide cooking and dining facilities, therapy rooms as well as provision for the medical care required by their clients to aid treatment. A key requirement of the design is that it should have a ‘homely’ feel, yet a modern environment.

The challenge of the project, faced by Murphy Philipps and the team, lay in creating a therapeutic environment within an existing building that was split over four floors. The design had to achieve connectivity, transparency and maintain patient health and safety without losing service functionality. Murphy Philipps approach was to work closely with the clinical team to understand the patient’s activity timetable and their daily journey through the building. The overall design concept focuses on the patient kitchen and dining area being at the heart of the building. The environment had to support the patients re-education of food and healthy meal preparation. The kitchen brings everyone together in one place. Construction for the facility is scheduled to commence in November 2018, with completion in April 2019.
