Murphy Philipps were commissioned by a local community group to undertake a feasibility and planning application for a new community centre in North London. The scheme was to incorporate parts of the existing centre but reclad to integrate with the new structure. The new facility includes a 3 classroom nursery and a range of spaces and areas to suit a wide range of activities, including external play and recreation areas. Circulation spaces were designed to be generous with zones for informal seating and storage in order to maximise the flexible use of the entire building.
The scheme was designed to allow for partial occupation throughout the phased construction phases. Located with a residential area, the project involved a number of sensitive planning issues especially relating to massing, overlooking and security.
