The new Hertford County Hospital is arranged in two wings, linked by a three storey fully-glazed element which accommodates the main reception, waiting areas, a café and a community meeting room. Clinics radiate from this central space and include generic and specialist outpatient consulting, a children's unit, sexual health services, physiotherapy, audiology, speech therapy and a large imaging department.
The new building has been designed to reflect the proportions and general massing of the listed Victorian building retained on the site. It is clad in off-white self-coloured render set below a recessed cornice detail which is illuminated at night with strip lighting.
